EXPERIENCE & EXPERTISE
Tom has a strong track record of advocating for the protection of human rights within the community, primarily through his work in the legal assistance sector.
Tom was previously a lawyer in the Economic and Social Rights Program at Victoria Legal Aid. Tom assisted clients with tenancy issues by delivering advice and providing representation at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal to clients facing eviction. He also advised clients on issues relating to infringements, Centrelink payments, and National Disability Insurance Scheme appeals.
Prior to moving to Victoria, Tom completed the graduate program at Legal Aid Western Australia. He worked as a criminal duty lawyer in the Magistrates Court and supported the family violence team, before joining the civil division’s social inclusion program. In this role, Tom advised clients on their varied legal and social issues, including employment, bankruptcy, insurance, debt collection, future planning, and property disputes. He also appeared in the State Administrative Tribunal in guardianship and administration matters.
Tom believes in the importance of delivering trauma informed, therapeutic and culturally safe legal services. This involves adapting service delivery to meet the unique needs of the client and recognising the intersectionality of the multiple forms of discrimination they might face. Tom is known for connecting with clients in a meaningful way and fostering an inclusive organisational culture.

Tom has previously volunteered with the WA AIDS Council and Pride In Law.
